Does whole body vibration exercise improve oxidative stress markers in women with fibromyalgia? BJMBR
Santos,J.M.; Mendonça,V.A.; Ribeiro,V.G.C.; Tossige-Gomes,R.; Fonseca,S.F.; Prates,A.C.N.; Flor,J.; Oliveira,A.C.C.; Martins,J.B.; Garcia,B.C.C.; Leite,H.R.; Figueiredo,P.H.S.; Bernardo-Filho,M.; Lacerda,A.C.R..
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of whole body vibration (WBV) exercise on oxidative stress markers in a group of women with fibromyalgia (FM) compared to a group of healthy women (CT). Twenty-one women diagnosed with FM and 21 age- and weight-matched healthy women were enrolled the study. Plasma oxidative stress markers (primary outcomes) were evaluated at rest and after WBV, and included thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), iron reduction capacity (FRAP), superoxide dismutase antioxidant enzymes activity (SOD), and catalase (CAT). At rest, the FM group had higher TBARS (P<0.001) and FRAP (P<0.001), and lower CAT (P=0.005) compared to the CT. In the CT group, the WBV had no effect on TBARS (P=0.559) and FRAP...

Fibromyalgia and the relevance of the whole-body vibration exercises in vibratory platforms: a short review BABT
Pinto,Nelson de Souza; Monteiro,Milena de Oliveira Bravo; Paiva,Dulciane Nunes; Santos-Filho,Sebastião David; Misssailidis,Sotiris; Thompson,Diane; Cabezuelo,Pedro Marín; Bernardo-Filho,Mario.
Among nonpharmacological strategy to manage fibromyalgia, exercise (aerobic) has shown efficacy. Whole-body vibration (WBV) exercise has been proposed as a potential clinical intervention. WBV would induce increase in growth hormone (GH). An impairment of the hypothalamic-pituitary-GH-Insulin Growth Factor-1(IGF-1) axis has been implicated in the pathophysiology of fibromyalgia. This article aims to review the studies on exploring the relationship between WBV and fibromyalgia. Literature searches were performed in the PubMed database on 04/03/2010 using terms related to "pain", "whole body vibration" and "fibromyalgia". An important number of publications were identified with the term "pain" and in comparison, only a small number of articles were found...

Inflammatory biomarkers responses after acute whole body vibration in fibromyalgia BJMBR
Ribeiro,V.G.C.; Mendonça,V.A.; Souza,A.L.C.; Fonseca,S.F.; Camargos,A.C.R.; Lage,V.K.S.; Neves,C.D.C.; Santos,J.M.; Teixeira,L.A.C.; Vieira,E.L.M.; Teixeira Junior,A.L.; Mezêncio,B.; Fernandes,J.S.C.; Leite,H.R.; Poortmans,J.R.; Lacerda,A.C.R..
The aims of this study were 1) to characterize the intensity of the vibration stimulation in women diagnosed with fibromyalgia (FM) compared to a control group of healthy women (HW) matched by age and anthropometric parameters, and 2) to investigate the effect of a single session of whole body vibration (WBV) on inflammatory responses. Levels of adipokines, soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNFr1, sTNFr2), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Oxygen consumption (VO2) was estimated by a portable gas analysis system, heart rate (HR) was measured using a HR monitor, and perceived exertion (RPE) was evaluated using the Borg scale of perceived exertion. Acutely mild WBV increased VO2 and HR...

Soluble fractalkine in the plasma of fibromyalgia patients Anais da ABC (AABC)
GARCIA,JUAN J.; ORTEGA,EDUARDO.
Fibromyalgia is a form of non-articular rheumatism in which inflammatory cytokines seem to be involved. However, there is still no analytical specific diagnostic criterion for this disease. The aim was to examine a possible role of fractalkine as a biomarker in fibromyalgia. Plasma levels of soluble fractalkine were compared between women diagnosed with fibromyalgia (n=17) and healthy women (n=10) as controls. Fractalkine released by monocytes was also evaluated. Fibromyalgia patients showed lower plasma fractalkine than healthy women. Since most inflammatory pathologies show elevated plasma levels of soluble fractalkine, the results may contribute towards a differential diagnosis for fibromyalgia.
